Synopsis: Contemporary 21st-century rendering of the African American folkloric badman Stagger Lee (Stagolee). The feud between Stagger Lee and Billy Lyons is legendary and has been retold countless times. Word has it that Stagger Lee shot Billy Lyons over a Stetson hat, a woman, a gambling debt, politics, or simply because Stagger was that mean of a man--depending on what version of the tale you follow. The origins of the metamyth begin with a Christmas Eve bar fight in Saint Louis in 1895. The events of the murder are fairly commonplace and known to most. Two friends, Billy Lyons and “Stagger” Lee Shelton, were drinking at a saloon. Billy became upset and grabbed Stag’s hat. Billy refused to return Stag’s hat; Stagger Lee shot Billy in the gut, picked up his hat, and left the premises. Billy Lyons died from his wound shortly afterwards. According to newspaper reports of the time, five murders were committed in Saint Louis that night alone. Still, only the Stagger Lee shooting of Billy gained world-wide infamy at the intersection of politics, folklore, race, and raw persistence. The story was first covered in the St. Louis Globe-Democrat on December 28th, 1895. In 1896, the political scene was extremely tense and--with Saint Louis being one of the largest cities in the country--it was necessary for politicians to get every vote, including the black vote. This was increasingly relevant because the Republicans were losing their stronghold, and because Shelton was claimed to be among the Democrats; and Lyons, the Republicans. The murder received significant exposure and political scrutiny and resulted in a hung jury trial--after Stagger Lee hired one of the most prominent lawyers in the state. Shelton’s case was retried in 1897, and Stagger Lee was found guilty of murder and sentenced to the notorious penitentiary in Jefferson City, Missouri.

She writes a weekly newsletter--in addition to a number of other internet ventures.
